Chapter

Fourteen

I collapsed into a kitchen chair and released a long, slow breath. I was so tired, my eyes felt like sandpaper. It didn’t help that my body ached all over either. I’d managed to ignore it during the pack meeting, but now every bruise, scrape, and broken bone seemed to flare to life all at once, reminding me of the beating I’d taken earlier this morning. Thankfully, everything would heal. But a little sleep would help me heal faster. Protein, too. Not that I had an opportunity for either right now.

I lifted my legs onto a nearby chair and had just begun kneading my thighs when Sam appeared, his shadow looming over me. Without a word, he lifted my legs from the chair, sat, and placed them in his lap. Then he set to work, his fingers massaging the inner arch of my feet. I practically melted into the chair, my head tipping back as I moaned. Relief spread up my legs and for one blissful moment, my body sighed contentedly.

Cole and Jorge took their own seats across from us, and Jorge opened his laptop. The two shot me matching amused glances before Jorge turned back to his screen. Honestly, I didn’t care what this looked like to them. A girl deserved a little pain relief, right?

“Okay, courtesy of Sam’s father, we received their file on Corbin. Here’s what they learned,” Jorge began. “Corbin Brown, aged thirty-six, Caucasian, former member of the England Pack, and a British National. Defected from his pack approximately one year ago and left the country, arriving here shortly after. He has a colorful history with the MPS—Metropolitan Police Services. Theft, disturbing the peace, a few assault charges…” Jorge’s eyes skimmed the screen as he read off Corbin’s dossier. “All of it came to a stop, though, when he joined the England Pack. When I reached out to the England Pack alpha, he mentioned that Corbin had transferred from a smaller auxiliary pack located in northern England, one that disbanded when this alpha took over. He described Corbin as argumentative, temperamental, and someone who struggles with authority figures.”

“Check, check, and check,” I muttered. That fit everything I knew about him. “Was anyone able to track down anything that might help us locate him now? A property, license plate number, video feed of him taking Laini? Anything that might help.”

Jorge offered a grim smile. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to dig up much. There weren’t any cameras on the road where Laini was taken. Now, there were cameras near the park where he attacked you, but whoever picked him and his men up kept their vehicle out of sight.”

I sighed.

“I did find one thing. It might be nothing. Or it could be everything. I found three recent property purchases in the nearby area, all under the name Evan Brown.”

“Okay…” I hedged, wondering how that was relevant.

“Corbin’s middle name is Evan,” Jorge stated.

My eyes widened. Could this be a connection? Brown was a popular surname. This Evan Brown could be someone else entirely.
